I went to the doctor recently and unfortunately received some bad news. After numerous tests, we have discovered that I am at severe risk of muscle degeneration. What this means is the muscle that is on my body is breaking down a lot quicker than normal for someone of my age. This is usually what someone twenty years older than me experiences. Good muscle health is so important as it helps the rest of your body stay strong. I remember when I used to work as a cashier at a supermarket, my legs would tire out extremely quickly compared to everyone else.
While this is a disease that’s hard for me to treat, there are things that I can do to help protect myself and make my muscles stronger. Exercise will be key to this. For the last month I’ve been meeting with a personal trainer each week to help me build and maintain muscle. I’ve always found exercising to be quite tricky. I’ve never found myself to be a strong person and this would always be quite discouraging to me. I know this probably sounds extreme, but I was always scared of fitness equipment. My insecurities would always get the best of me and I would compare myself to everyone else in the gym. It honestly felt like that everyone could lift more than me, had better stamina, and looked better. I was always told that the gym was meant to make you feel better about yourself, all it did was make me feel worse.
My trainer is teaching me how to put together a multifunctional home gym system to train on the days I feel insecure. I think this is a great idea. Now I’ll be able to stay regular with my training and be able to do so in the comfort of my own home. I don’t know what it is, but there are just some days where I want to be able to train in private. This home option is giving me that luxury. Slowly, I am starting to feel a huge change in my body.
